Well, Brian French, owner of Aubree's Pizza brought in an NMU hockey jersey worn by the team captain, Phil Fox!

Bring us your favorite hockey, baseball, football etc, jersey and let us frame it for you. You can add photos, tickets, patches or pucks. Really anything you'd like displayed with it, we can find a way to incorporate it into your design.

One old 1847 UP Map and one not so old UP Map

How cool is this????

Here is an 1847 Geological map of the Keweenaw to Chocolay. In the detailed photo here, you'll see Marquette named as Worcester (pronounced Wooster). Two years later the name of our city is changed to Marquette, honoring Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette, who explored this land and further during the 1670's.

This is a completely authentic 164 year old map.

We're 8 days into the new year of 2011 already. I can't believe I'm saying that year!

I remember when I was a kid (teenager) in the 80's and thinking about the future, particularly the 2000's, and how I imagined it. People driving in their own spaceship cars was what I thought it would be like. I remember vaguely when cordless phones were introduced and I thought to myself... Self, I wonder if people will be walking around with their home phone everywhere they go in the future? What a world, what a world...

U.P. Satellite Poster

This is a really interesting poster of the UP.

It represents a composite of images from several passes of the Landsat 5 satellite. Landsat 5 is a satellite designed to monitor the Earth's environment.

The unusual colors on this poster represent near-infrared, mid-infrared, and thermal infrared (heat).

Dyes used to make this poster have been adjusted from the actual color the data represents.

Bright green colors seen represent deciduous trees (maples, aspens, oaks, and birch).

Dark Purple are coniferous trees (pines, spruce and firs).

Other colors are described in detail, which is included in your purchase of this interesting poster.

How I became a picture framer.

Do you ever wonder how a person chooses their career? Or how a career might choose the person? I started thinking about this a while back and thought I might share how I came to become a Custom Picture Framer.

Picture it. Summer 1991. I am almost through my first year away at college and my parents told me about a picture framing position open at a local frame shop in my hometown, Harbor Springs. So, I called Gathman's Framing, introduced myself and was promptly told they were considering hiring somebody else and to call back a few days later. A few days later, I called. They didn't have an answer for me and suggested calling again. After a few more weeks of persistant phone calls on my part I was hired for the job. (Honestly, at this time I wasn't even sure what picture framers do or if I would like what I was hired to do.) The next 3 months I was taught to cut mats, cut glass, drymount art, and assembling the entire job. I learned the basics of picture framing for the next 2 summers while I was home from school. Looking back, I'm not sure I would have gotten that job if I hadn't been such a pest calling over and over again.

Fast forward to 1996. Kalamazoo, MI. I'm fresh out of spending 4 years at WMU and getting a degree in Graphic Design. I sent out many a resume for any position in this field, but with no luck really. Then one day, I was scanning the newspaper and saw an ad for an experienced Custom Picture Framer - full time. Long story, short, I worked there for 5 or so years and learned just about everything I could about framing from start to finish (chosing matts to frames to placing orders to choosing what frames to carry in stock to cutting matts/frames and finally assembling) During this time, I was feeling like this is a great job. I like doing it.

Again fast forward to 2001. Marquette, MI. I just got married and my husband and I moved to Marquette. We came here with no jobs. No place to live, except a hotel. Well, a short time later, we found jobs and a place to live. I worked at Salon Salon for a few months until one day (I don't know why I didn't do this in the first place) I went right next door to Art of Framing and asked if they were hiring. Joy said "No, actually, I've been thinking of selling." I went home and told my husband what happened and he said "We should see if we can buy it!" Without hesitation I knew this would be my future. A few months later, I found myself being a picture framer again.

Often, I look back and I could have just as easily not gotten that first framing job in '91. Then, where would I be? Surely, not here, doing a job that I love, in a town that I love, around people that I love, and next to the greatest lake in the world!

Now, that I'm here, enjoying everything about framing, I wonder why the heck do I love being a framer? There are so many reasons. But, the strongest for me is knowing that what I frame will be treasured for years and years, by the person having it framed. Sometimes, we have someone bring in an antique frame (for one reason or another) and I'll find an old-old-old framers sticker on the back. I smile to myself, thinking about the framer who put this treasure together for their customer maybe, 30, 60, 100 years ago?

I can only imagine if they felt the same as I do each time I place my Art of Framing sticker on the back of each framing.

NMU Hockey Jersey's for Aubree's Pizza

Our latest shadowbox framing came from the owner of Aubree's Pizza, Bryan French.
He has been adding on to his pizza business left and right and for the newest addition [to the building] he wanted to have 2 NMU Hockey players' jerseys framed.

We opted for a black shadowbox frame and gold/yellow mat for the background. Then adding more interest to the design we placed some athletic looking stripes behind the jersey.

These turned out so great!

Ladies night is November 20th!!

Art of Framing will be hosting the paint for prizes event for the second year.
Last year was so much fun and we had a great response from it, so we decided to go for it again this year.
Ladies, come in and paint on one 5x7 canvas that we provide.
Your painted entry will be randomly chosen for 1 of 3 prizes.
You can paint whatever you want to paint.
The rules are: There are no rules.
First prize is a framed Nita Engle s/n print.

Praise for a new restaurant

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to get away from the shop for a few hours to go on a bike ride.
Mary O'Donnell (she owns Mary's Closet) asked me if I'd like to go for a bike ride with her and a couple of friends. They go once a week around Presque Isle Park and then stop somewhere different each week for a bite to eat.

This time we went to COCO's (formerly The Shores Restaurant) and had an outstanding meal. I had the Chicken Ashley. It was amazing! The other girls had Salmon, and they did love their dinner too!

Definately going back soon!!!

To Whom It May Concern,

For the past couple of years, we have been trying to locate a picture, “Sailing the Straits” by Kathleen Chaney Fritz. This print has special meaning to us, and we inquired in shops and galleries, searched the internet, emailed numerous art galleries and framing shops and even contacted the artist hoping to locate one – to no avail.

In July 2007, while traveling in the UP and visiting the Marquette area, we had a really wonderful experience and would like to share it with you. The downtown area was having a sidewalk sale and, while strolling down Washington Street, we came across the “Art of Framing” Store. As usual, we asked if they had the print by Chaney-Fritz. They did not, but the owner Stacie DuWaldt carried customer service a step further. With nothing to gain financially for her business, she continued to offer knowledge and assistance. In the past, she had worked for an art store in Kalamazoo that carried Chaney-Fritz prints and offered to call that store to see if they had “Sailing The Straits”. Being from Grand Rapids, and having already talked with the artist’s husband who lives in the area, we thought it unlikely any print would be found. While we waited, Stacie contacted the Kalamazoo store (at her expense) and, to our amazement, located the picture and had it held for us. Upon returning home, we had it mailed directly to our
house. Thank you Stacie DuWaldt!

The picture has now been framed and hangs in a prominent place in our home. We are thrilled, at long last, to have acquired it; but in addition, it has become a symbol of our Marquette trip (a lovely town with warm people). A place we will surely want to visit again.

A day in the life of a picture framer (part 1)

Ever wonder what it's like to be a picture framer?
6:45 am
I wake up slowly and get suited for an hour of Tae Bo with Billy Blanks.

8:00 am
Grab a yogurt and mix Grape Nuts into it.
(and hope my teeth don't break from the crunchy)

My teeth, in fact, HAVE been breaking.
Ahhhh... the joys of getting older.

Shower.

9:00 am
Get my husband (Tom) and Perry (shop dog) in the car for the 10 minute drive to town.

9:10 am
Open the shop ~ Turn on Computer/air compressor/get a coffee, yum

9:30 am
Phone rings. It's a solicitor. Hang up before they try to get you to say "Yes, this is the owner"
Those solicitors will take that one simple word "yes" and use it to sign you up for everything you don't want. I find it's just best to hang up.

10:30 am
My Favorite Marquette artist comes in. Carol Papaleo, she owns Art UP Style.
Carol has a few "new paintings" she needs framed. Helping her at the design table is great!
We chose some nice matting and added a v-groove, and a "gun-metal grey" metal frame.

10:45am
I get moving on a really wonderful and slightly complex framing.
It involves 6 metals and 14 photos. Designing a layout for this came quite easy for me.
This framing also needed to have some calligraphy done, to describe what kind of animal it was.
I work on the calligraphy for about 1 hour, then I realize I need to go move my car!
I just can't see myself getting a parking permit, so I go and move the car every 2 hours.

A frame job with a story

Recently, one Mother brought us her sons "airborne" course certificate, wings (pin), a photo and patches to be framed. He told his Mom "This is something I'm really proud of, could you have it framed?" She brought it in and said to us, "Do it how you think looks the best". And we did :)
We choose a wood frame that resembled a camouflage texture (kind of) and a black mat that cuts on a BLUE core. From there, we added a v-groove in order to tie all the ingredients together!
It looks so awesome. She literally shrieked with delight when she picked it up. I LOVE it when that happens.

Charley Harper 1922-2007

I am so very crushed to say that Charley Harper has passed away.
Obituary
When I called Harper Studios to place an order on June 5th they told me that Charley was in the hospital. Pneumonia. MY HEART SUNK. I called again on the 18th, that's when they told me he was gone.

Pounded bark art Framing

A brand new customer of ours brought in a 48x96 piece of aboriginal art (this is shredded bark, that's been pounded, pressed and pieced together in sections) they wanted framed.

This project proved to be a bit of a challenge because we were to "float mount" the art onto the backer board. We came up with a very strong hinging technique that will not harm the art, but will also hold the piece in place for years and years to come.

We used a 4" wide Larson Juhl frame that has a beautiful finish that totally resembles raw bark.

It took us 3 full work days and 4 trips - in one day- to Menards (for extra bracing support bars,etc).
The entire framing ended up weighing 60 lbs.

I started painting lightswitch plates for myself for home, then I thought "how fun it would be for everyone to have a chance at owning their little piece of functional art". (and you don't even have to frame it!!) :)
So, I've been painting a few lightswitch plates. Here's some pictures of a few I've done.

They are super fun and if you have a special scene or photo you want me to paint from, I can totally do that.

Geez, I sure havent kept up my blog here!
It has been so cold lately, all I want to do is stay indoors!

All the kiddies will be coming downtown for Halloween soon and we've stocked up on bags and bags of candy! I love seeing all the costumes, although I'm not real big into dressing up, I do get a big kick out of seeing everyone else. :)

This was a really nice project we worked on recently.

A gentleman brought in a wonderful collection of his grandfathers WWI memorabilia.
Which included:
~~ A Soldiers diary, (we scanned the last entry made and put in a "mini-frame" within the frame),
~~ Also, a postcard sent to his mother, saying their had ship arrived safely
Among other items were:
~~ Photos, including very well taken care of panaramic photo of his grandfathers company.

Very rewarding job to be given the pleasure of designing.

We got to work this morning and found this big guy in our doorway.
I looked him up on the internet and he is called a Cecropia Moth.
They are not usually seen in the day, because they seem to only fly at night.
~ So the birds don't eat them.
He fluttered around for a few minutes and then he took off across the street.

Say! If any of you have an unusual insects (naturally expired please, hee hee)
why don't you bring them in so we can frame it.
That would be a really neat way to display your bugs.

I've been wanting to post more info here!
We are so busy with orders that, I'm afraid I'll have to wait to post anything GOOD until after Christmas weekend.

I do have one artist I want to share with you. He is a photographer and I think he will be making his mark here in Marquette very, very soon. But, alas you'll have to wait for a week or so, as I do need to get his permission to post his art (also to get his images on this here computer).

I pulled a small sliver from my pinky finger today. It reminded me briefly of a framing injury I had in the winter of '97. I was living in Kalamazoo and worked at a shop named Frames and Things. Great place to work.

Anyways, I was trimming some printed charts for Stryker Industries. I was using a very large straight edge ruler, and a very fresh, sharp razor blade. Well, somewhere along the way my left thumb got in the way as I was making a straight pass cutting thru this chart. It all happened so fast and didn't really feel anything until I saw the blood... I remember cursing and apologized to Nellie (my boss) for swearing. I held my hand over the garbage until she got me a rag to wrap around my finger. I needed to get a tetanis shot, just in case, ya know? So, Nellie drove me to her doctor where they bandaged me up real tightly and gave me a shot.

I still have the scar on my thumb, which doesn't look as scary as the story was.

Metal Frames are not always my favorite type of frame, but this line is sooo cool. They are 11/2" wide and each are made with pure Pewter, Nickle, Persian Gold, Copper, Bronze, Zinc or Iron. Also available in narrower profiles.

Middle Photo: Here is the Antiqua line of frames. Frames shown here are a little over an inch wide, but also available are 2" and 3" wide!
I love how they look like tree bark. This frame looks great on nature inspired pictures.

Bottom Photo: These three frames are from the Bolshoi (Bowl-shoy) Collection and are 3" wide. Go BOL-shoi!
